Elaphe technology dates back to the late 1980s and stems from our founder’s research into high-specific torque electric motors. At the turn of the millenia, we designed the first high-torque motor that makes sense for direct-drive automotive applications. In 2006, Elaphe Propulsion Technologies was founded with a mission to bring in-wheel powertrain solutions to the automotive mass market.

Today, Elaphe Propulsion Technologies is a developer and producer of high-tech propulsion technology based on the premise of multiple-motor propulsion and a holistic vantage point. A major cornerstone of Elaphe’s technology portfolio is our world-leading in-wheel propulsion technology, representing the enabling technology for the new era of innovation in the automotive industry.

History

The in-wheel legacy

Elaphe technology stems from the work of Andrej Detela, a world-class quantum physicist, who began investigating in-wheel motor solutions already back in the 1980s. Andrej Detela and Gorazd Lampič, Elaphe founder and CEO, joined forces in 2003 and founded Elaphe three years later with a mission to bring in-wheel powertrain solutions to the automotive mass market.

Elaphe has since invested heavily in numerous development areas, continually expanding its know-how, depth of experience and maturity of products. Elaphe R&D team utilizes state-of-the-art computational techniques that offer reliable insight into multi-physics behavior of an in-wheel motor system (structural, fatigue, thermo-mechanical, electromagnetic-thermal, acoustic and other aspects of motor operation). Major areas of investment have been besides industry-grade testing and validation capacities, the development of proprietary control and monitoring hardware and software (Propulsion Control Unit, Inverters (Controllers), Condition monitoring, etc.), with the goal to maximize the useful advantages of in-wheel technology and to facilitate the use of the technology in niche markets, key for generating early cash-flow, fueling investments, company growth and organization maturity.
