Well, today we will be discussing the future and the technologies from the present which are paving the way in the preparation for the driverless era. The shared belief among major automotive players is that self-driving cars are inevitable. When they arrive in tidal waves, they will transform transportation and industries attached to the car.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Every day, engineers are challenged with creating safer and more efficient vehicles that appeal to a wide user-base. The race for efficiency has brought us lighter and more efficient internal combustion engines, sophisticated transmission systems, and lighter components. It also brought us in-wheel direct-drive electric motors. But still, the appearance of our cars is characterized by the traditional drivetrain layout with the domination of a central engine, a gearbox and power transmission. Together, they create a series of complex systems, which are hard to control electronically, expensive to manufacture. Moreover, they make the vehicles heavier. As the majority of the drivetrain is placed in front and below the passenger compartment, the space available to designers for user-centric design becomes severely limited. The <a href=\"https:\/\/in-wheel.com\/sl\/product-category\/powertrain\/\">Elaphe smart propulsion architecture<\/a> together with the new range of <a href=\"https:\/\/in-wheel.com\/sl\/product-category\/motors\/\">Elaphe in-wheel motors<\/a> puts us one step closer towards the base for a truly smart self-driving platform. The 1990s brought us the first adaptive cruise-control systems and automated parking was in the making since the late 1980s. Although it took more than 10 years for automated parking to make its first debut in consumer vehicles, it finally came with the introduction of the second generation of Toyota\u2019s famous Prius hybrid in 2003.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The rise of consumer electronics with the advent of the smartphone era has been the driver for the transformation of multiple industries since the introduction of the original iPhone. The automotive industry is no exception. Smarter cars were the first step, and the industry has embraced this concept to the point that the biggest news story at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas could not be measured in terms of pixels, megabits or watts, but kilometers per hour, with major automotive players betting on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-news\/motor-shows-ces\/ces-2016-consumer-electronics-show-report-and-news-round\">connected cars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Surely, individual vehicles will benefit from information obtained from other vehicles in the vicinity, especially information relating to traffic congestion and safety hazards, making our transit safer and less stressful. But, are we there yet?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4913 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/in-wheel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/connected-car-main-1400x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1400\" height=\"700\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/in-wheel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/connected-car-main-1400x700.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/in-wheel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/connected-car-main-1400x700-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in-wheel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/connected-car-main-1400x700-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/in-wheel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/connected-car-main-1400x700-180x90.jpg 180w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1400\/700;\" \/>The earliest improvements to daily driving routines will arrive almost instantly, with Mobileye and Mercedes planning to release hands-free driving technology for highways (rather well structured environments) as soon as this year.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Soon after, they will be followed by autonomous capabilities for country roads. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-3442895\/Never-lost-New-technique-makes-GPS-accurate-just-centimeters.html\">New techniques<\/a> with more <a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/sharper-gps-needs-even-more-accurate-atomic-clocks-38109\">precise GPS positioning<\/a> along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2015\/09\/laser-breakthrough-speed-rise-self-driving-cars\/\">advanced LIDAR systems<\/a> might be the key technology leaps towards making this a reality. (You can check out the current tech behind the self-driving Google cars <a href=\"http:\/\/googlesautonomousvehicle.weebly.com\/technology-and-costs.html\">here)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">By 2018, we could be able to sleep behind the wheel as the cars get even smarter.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2020, they will be able to make their way across multiple lanes.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Research suggests that by 2025, 100% of cars will be connected [1], and by 2040, 75% of cars on the road will be autonomous [2,3].<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For now, humans are mostly doing the driving, but the AI inside the cars is doing the learning.\u00a0 A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umich.edu\/~umtriswt\/PDF\/UMTRI-2015-34_Abstract_English.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent study<\/a> on road-safety shows that autonomous vehicles on the roads in California have crashed more often than regular ones, but the incidents have been far less serious as those caused by humans behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4914 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/in-wheel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/GoogleFenderBender-1400x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"694\" height=\"347\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/in-wheel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/GoogleFenderBender-1400x700.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/in-wheel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/GoogleFenderBender-1400x700-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/in-wheel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/GoogleFenderBender-1400x700-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/in-wheel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/GoogleFenderBender-1400x700-180x90.jpg 180w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 694px) 100vw, 694px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 694px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 694\/347;\" \/>Machine learning technologies require millions of miles of experience for proper operation.
