Elaphe is driving breakthrough innovation in microelectronics for electric vehicles with European co-financing.
Elaphe, a leading Slovenian company in electric vehicle innovation, is part of the ambitious European IPCEI ME/CT project (Important Project of Common European Interest in Microelectronics and Communication Technologies), co-financed by the European Union together with Member States. The project focuses on accelerating the development of advanced technologies in microelectronics and communications for Europe’s digital and green transformation.
Elaphe’s Objectives Within the MEEV Project
Within the Microelectronics for Electric Vehicles (MEEV) project, Elaphe is developing solutions that will contribute to major technological breakthroughs in power electronics and energy converters for electric vehicles.
Subproject (1): Power Electronics (SiC/GaN)
Dedicated to the development of power electronics for controlling traction electric motors.
The development is based on a new generation of semiconductor transistors (SiC/GaN), which enable thermal losses to be reduced by half, operation at higher temperatures, and up to a 20% reduction in electronics volume.
The key result will be a prototype power electronics unit that increases the efficiency of propulsion systems and contributes to longer electric vehicle range or smaller batteries.
- Project start: 1 January 2023
- Expected project completion: 30 June 2026
- Subproject lead: Tomaž Motaln
- Project partner: Infineon
Subproject (2): Energy Converters (GaAs)
The objective is to develop advanced thermoelectric converters based on gallium arsenide (GaAs), which will convert excess heat into useful energy.
The expected result is three prototype chip series with experimental validation of a new converter concept that enables higher efficiency without the need for a temperature difference.
This technology has the potential for broader use in other industrial applications.
- Project start: 1 January 2023
- Project completion: 30 June 2026
- Contract manager: Janko Kobal
- Project partner: Freiberger Compound Materials
