Gorazd Lampic, CEO, Elaphe Ltd.

Panelists discussed the potential of in-wheel motors (IWMs) from OEM perspectives, the architectural challenges still facing the auto industry, and the growing role of software-defined everything in shaping the future of EV architecture.

In-Wheel Drive Experience at the F1 Track

An exclusive and interactive experience at the renowned Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya Formula 1 track, showcased advanced dynamics, control, and power of Elaphe’s in-wheel motor technology. Attendees tested various in-wheel drive platforms across a variety of mule and prototype vehicles (compact SUV, small cross-over, light commercial vehicle), all equipped with Elaphe’s cutting-edge motors and control.

For the first time, Elaphe’s vehicle motion control software was publicly demonstrated in both dynamic and static settings, showing how the in-wheel motors and custom software streamline vehicle systems by reducing components while enhancing control and efficiency. Demo drives showcased body roll control on a slalom course without active suspension, relying solely on in-wheel motor actuation. It also performed a tank turn, highlighting the precision and control of Elaphe’s technology, achieving up to 20 times faster control compared to conventional electric powertrain.

The event introduced Elaphe’s patent-pending vibro-acoustic functionality through a mule vehicle, which demonstrated these features during on-track driving, showing how in-wheel motors enhance the driving experience with real-time, authentic and customizable sound profiles and haptic feedback. The mule vehicle also demonstrated vertical motion control functionality, highlighting the technology’s versatility and potential to simplify vehicle design architecture.

Additionally, the light commercial vehicle mule vehicle (SuperBear van), the Leitner’s ConnX prototype chassis, and Elaphe’s SUV mule vehicle were presented to further showcase the scalability of Elaphe’s in-wheel motor technology across various vehicle platforms. To date, technology has been integrated into over 100 different applications across different segments and vehicle purposes. Together, these demonstrations underscore Elaphe’s ability to redefine automotive design and performance by offering greater efficiency, enhanced control, and new levels of smart, scalable solutions for OEMs.
